The unintended expat blogger behind Open Village Balance

Hello, I am James
A project manager. A parent. An expatriate living in New York, United States.
A few years back, I moved here with my family. What began as a short-term assignment gradually opened a new chapter of life overseas.
How It Started
Moving to United States wasn’t in our long-term plan. Like many expat moves, it began as a work opportunity and soon grew into something much bigger.
The first months were demanding — unfamiliar systems, new routines, new expectations. Everyday tasks felt more complex than they should.
The Adjustment Period
There was culture shock, doubt, and plenty of hands-on learning. Yet gradually, routines took shape. We found places that suited us, connected with other families, and began creating something that felt steady.
Why I Built Open Village Balance
Most online guidance was either corporate relocation tips or surface-level tourism content. What was missing was an honest, everyday family viewpoint.
This site aims to bridge that gap — practical insights drawn from real life in United States.
What This Website Is About (And What It Isn’t)
This site PROVIDES:
- Practical experience gained from living in United States
- Centered on family life and daily realities
- Updated whenever something truly changes
This site ISN'T:
- Not a tourism authority resource
- a sponsored review platform
- Not a generic travel blog
Looking Ahead
Our stay in United States continues, and so does the learning process. As long as the information remains helpful, I’ll keep documenting what we discover.
If you have questions about family life in New York or anywhere in United States, don't hesitate to get in touch.
Best regards,
James
